“Please stay away from this insurance company if you have a family history of cancer or have cancer even if it’s in remission. Pre-authorization is required for chemotherapy. Since I’m an insurance coordinator I can tell you no other insurance company needs me to pre-authorize chemotherapy. Why would this insurance company? Greed?
If your provider wants to start chemotherapy and pre-authorization is late they tell you that pre-authorization can be retroactive, they then tell you pre-authorization is approved, your provider then gets a call and will be told that payment can’t be made because retroactive authorization is not allowed. In a busy oncologist office, this type of requirement is ridiculous.
I would give a negative star if I could!”

“PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE stay away from Health America.
I am a parent of a child with autism and have had nothing but bad luck with Health America. They have denied every pre-authorization we have ever filed because “”they never got the paperwork”” even though our doctor’s office sends it and we also send it certified mail. The customer service reps are horrible as each one will give you a different answer.
We are currently owed $13,000 for procedures that we had to pay out of pocket. The have sent us $400.00. I have recorded every single phone call that I have made and am planning on going to an attorney as I have over 80 hours of calls recorded and still no luck.
PLEASE STAY AWAY!”

“My company just switched to a plan through HealthAmerica. BIG MISTAKE!!! I was insured through this company about eight years ago through the employer I had at that time and it was the worst experience I had with insurance in my life.
I thought it was illegal to practice medicine if you weren’t a doctor but the underwriters at HealthAmerica sure do it without penalty. They declined payment of most everything that my doctor requested. Especially prescriptions. They didn’t cover squat. I ended up paying for my own medications which cost me a fortune. I hated having this insurance.
I was constantly on the phone trying to figure out why they declined this or declined that. If my doctor feels that I should be taking a specific medication and they don’t cover it, what happens when I get even more sick from not taking that medication or getting the treatment that they felt I didn’t need and then I end up having to have surgery? Yea, that actually happened. The idiots wouldn’t pay for a $100 per month prescription but by golly they ended up having to fork over the doe when I went through surgery which cost about $25,000. It takes a true mindless person to think that way. Way to go, nothing like saving your company moron.
So, here I am faced with this crappy insurance again. They need to call it uninsurance. And guess what happened today? You guessed it…they declined a prescription for my son who is very sick and needs it. Guess who I’m going to sue if my son gets worse! I’ll give you one guess. HealthAmerica sure will take your money, but don’t expect to get any coverage for your efforts.”

As the posters above stated, they are horrible. The customer service is terrible and what one person will say will be totally different from the next.
My daughter who is 4 had a first-time seizure. She was rushed to the hospital because she was drooling unresponsive and hand was twitching on one side. It was a scary event and to make matters worse Health America wrote me a letter to say, “”Your daughter has been authorized to get the hospital care, however, that doesn’t mean that we’ll pay for it”” They want to try and find a loop hole to get out of paying for her care.
Every time I try and call those people they can never give me a straight answer as to what everything will cost. If they end up not paying for her bill I may just have no choice but to let the hospital take my house because I am not able to pay for that even on a payment plan.
To top it off I have skin cancer and they won’t tell me straight out what it would cost to operate on it. They just say, “”well, it could be a co-pay it could be your $2,000 deductible it all depends on how the dermatologist bills the insurance.””Then they go on to say,”” You just have to wait until you get the bill”” This may be another medical bill unpaid by me because again I just can’t afford it. They’ll just have to take my house.
And again my daughter now needs to see a neurologist 50.00 co-pay for the specialist and they bill me separate for any MRI or ekgs that are done. Again,””they can’t tell me what all this will cost. “” 2,000 deductible or $150.00 co-pay for these tests. what is it?
Then I’m having a baby in July had I known it was 2,000 deductible for me and 2,000 deductible for my newborn I would have tried to save for that. But it wasn’t until AFTER I got pregnant that my OB/GYN said that I must pay a 4,000 dollar deductible for the entire family.
Now I’m stuck. Literally stuck. This is the only insurance my husband’s company has.
I too will be seeing a lawyer and Health Insurance can pay for everything including pain and suffering.”

“This is by far the WORST health insurance I’ve ever had. My employer switched to Health America late last year. I just got a bill for $248.00 for lab work my doctor ordered. HA paid a total of $23.00 of the total bill.
I’ve never had to pay for a blood test EVER. We also have a $3,000.00 deductible. The coverage is crap and very expensive. Avoid Heath America at all costs.”

Their Rep came into our office and told us how great their plan was….needless to say, she neglected to tell us about PRIOR AUTHORIZATIONS. I needed prescriptions that required prior authorizations….so I have not taken my High Blood Pressure and Diabetes medications for 4 days now.
My Drs office said that Health America will not approve my High blood pressure meds (I guess that maker does not give them perks). They want me to call around and find the cheapest….I take 8 different meds…I wand my meds all at one pharmacy…in case there is a reaction.
They do not care about you…they want you to save money so they get in their paychecks. If your Employer wants to get Health America —- TELL THEM NO!!!!
I have several health issues — including heart problems. I can not wait to drop over so my family can sue them. I am to have a total hysterectomy (due to abnormal cells in my uterus) next week — I was approved but in their approval form it states “”it may be denied”” I called them and the girl that answered the phone laughed at me – I hung up.
DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR BUSINESS!!!!! Read all the reviews above and mine and stay away from their plans.”

“THE WORST insurance company I have ever had the misfortune of dealing with from every aspect- customer service, cost/copays, and coverage.
My monthly medication cost went from $10 to over $75 and when I called the customer service line to try to discuss my coverage the customer service reps were rude and had absolutely no idea what they were talking about- I literally got a different answer from every person I talked to.

“Health America is absolutely not a horrible carrier. I have been using them for my family’s health insurance for a while now. ALL of the reviews that I am reading above sound like they have a lot more to do with a lack of education on their plan versus them actually covering or providing good insurance.
There are also blatant falsehoods listed with these reviews. They do NOT take any funds without informing you of your acceptance. Sounds to me like that client purchased the policy through a lousy broker. A GOOD broker will inform you when you are approved and tell you exactly when and how much they will draft.
Like all health insurance carriers – there are good and bad things, but at the end of the day what the majority of the frustrations above show is a lack of education on what their insurance covered. I would suggest throwing your frustration at your HR departments or your insurance agents – Health America is a GOOD company.”

“I’ve had insurance from HealthAmerica since 2001. First I started with an HMO, then switched to a PPO. I have not had a problem.
I had surgery two years ago. There were no issues. I have taken the time to read my benefit materials carefully, so I understand how the prescription formula, my deductible and pre-authorization work.
I am extremely satisfied.”

“I bing searched Health america customer reviews to see if I was an exception. I now see that I’m not. This company is CRAP and probably some type of Ponzi scheme. Almost every post here is exactly what I’m experiencing. Except for the two HA employees, that post positive reviews.
Everytime I call them about covering my surgery and doctors appts. that led to it they say that they’re waiting on paperwork from DR. A then call again and they’re waiting for DR. B then call again… They’re waiting on DR. C then call again they’re waiting on DR. A. so on and so on and so on. We really need to get a mass lawsuit against this fake insurance company.”

“I arrived at this page by searching for reviews of this company. I wanted to see if anyone else had the same problems that I have. It’s true!!! Everyone here is proclaiming exactly what is happening to me. Health America gives the run around to everyone and claims pre-existing condition or no records received. Over and over again!
It’s stressing me out and I don’t need this. I suggest and I am going to file a report to the Attorney Generals office and Better Business Bureau. This company seems to take from the individual member and give to the group members. I posted a statement here a few days ago and it was suddenly removed.

“This company is bad, but then again, they all are. These folks are just a little worse.
Red tape, unhelpful robots masquerading as humans, and automatic answering systems that hang up on you if you hit the Zero button, are just the start. Then you run into the maze of “”pleasant dead ends””, professionally unhelpful folks who are trained not to allow any exceptions to their plan, no matter the circumstances. They don’t react to anything you say, but courteously offer you absolutely no help with the arbitrary problem their system creates! Thank you very much!
My most recent encounter with them was over a prescription I take monthly for several years now. I was surprised to find my plan would only dispense 80% of the prescribed amount without my Doctor “”answering a few questions””. Fine, you think, I’ll simply purchase the remaining 20% out of pocket and deal with it later. NO, that would require another prescription. How about a one-time exception so you can not have wasted a trip? Forget it.
A company that really has your interest at heart knows how to fix stuff like this. These folks clearly aren’t that. And remember, 33% of every healthcare dollar spent by us goes to these fine folks!”

“My husband went for a colonoscopy. It was a preventative screen. He had polyps and his father had colon cancer.
First, they said we did not have coverage because they did not receive a questionnaire saying we had no other insurance. I signed up for insurance through my job and we were not insured at the time. We never received such a questionnaire. So the customer service rep said she corrected that.
Then they said it was not a preventative screen even though the billing office submitted the codes that were requested. I think they are crooks.
They basically do not want to pay for preventative tests, so why have them. What else do you need insurance for the majority of the time? If they do not pay for routine exams, you may as well have no insurance.”

“This company has gone down hill. Several years ago, I had them and loved them. However, a lot has changed in 7 years.
Last year, we switched back to them. We were told that my deductible would be higher to cover “”feminine issues”” which we assumed and were told covered maternity…wrong! I am now pregnant and found out my pregnancy and delivery are not covered including my specialist visits.
They wouldn’t let me switch plans even though in one month I can renew my plan. No other company will pick me up knowing I am pregnant so I am stuck with this crap company.
They also have the worst customer service. One rep. Hung up on me after I asked to speak to a manager. Another one asked me if I even knew how to read when I had questions about my policy.

“Unbelievable!
I first called customer service prior to obtaining labs because they were coded routine and I wanted to make sure they were covered. I was told that they were covered and would not even count as part of my deductible. WRONG….$400 bill!!
Now I am “”procedure shy”” having been stung on the labs…I now need to schedule a routine colonoscopy…so I call to see if it is covered and if it is part of the deductible. I am told it is covered and not included in deduct. if the preventive code is used so I gave her the only code used for a routine screening colonoscopy V76.51 and I was told that was not covered because it was not preventive. There is no other code!!
So, I asked her which codes were considered preventive by health America and I was told that they were not allowed to tell me!! They obviously don’t want to pay….”

“Health America is worse than I could ever imagine.
My husband had a stroke. They refused to pay $9000 in therapy costs after they told the therapy facility that he had visits left. I have emails, etc. from Brokers and Health America with all kinds of different interpretations as to why it wasn’t paid. Now coming down to saying what their interpretation of the contract is.
Now I have to hire an Attorney in order to keep this out of collections. What a nightmare. Stay away from them – you can’t trust anything they tell you.”

“Health America One has the worst customer service I’ve ever experienced. You have to give a bunch of information before you can even talk to someone and then when you get a person (5 minutes later or more)there is a lot of background noise, people laughing, etc and the women on the phone are rude.
Two different days they said their lines were down and I would have to call back. It sounded really strange, like they just didn’t want to take calls. A couple times there was a loud buzz and then I was disconnected. I have never actually gotten any useful information out of them, just a headache.
Fortunately, we hardly use our insurance and don’t have very many questions. I’m looking to switch, though, because if we actually need to use this insurance, I’d be in trouble! Don’t use them.”

“Our coverage was cancelled Jan 1, 2014, because the insurance we had through this company did not meet the new ACA regulations. Guess what, they still collected the January payment! Hold time for customer service, is of course, an hour or more and still no one picks up.
Run away from this company!”

DO NOT get involved w/these people; they do everything over the web, and you cannot ever get to a person unless they are trying to sell you a plan; then they auto-debit your bank account so you have no way to cut them off; they is no mechanism to drop your coverage unless you phone them, which as stated above is impossible

“My company recently switched to HealthAmerica. I called up in advance to find out how much my screening colonoscopy would cost. The HA rep told me it would be free because “”it’s a preventative procedure.””
I asked if there was a copay, fees for lab or anesthesia, or anything else and was told, “”there’s no copay, you don’t have to pay a cent!”” Sounded good, but then my doctor found and removed a polyp during the procedure. (That’s one of the purposes of doing the screening – catch things early.) HA has now revised its payment position to classify the colonoscopy as surgery, not a preventative procedure.
I am now responsible for all costs (including lab and anesthesia) – just hit $1000!! (I’d rather have my old $200 copay.) This might make someone think twice before having another colonoscopy – and that certainly wasn’t the intent of the ACA. Bottom line – HealthAmerica = bad coverage and totaling misleading customer service.”

“This is the worst company I have ever dealt with for anything. They kept taking money out of my bank account for a year after I had switched to BCBS.
They over drafted my bank account after I made a “”stop payment”” with Coventry Health. Told me I was entitled to 11 months worth of a refund. Had me fax in proof of my other insurance, which I did. I called, they said my refund will be there in 7 to 10 business days. I waited two weeks, called back. They acted like there was no record of me doing any of this.
We straightened it out, I got the 7 to 10 Business days speech…. No check, I called back. They basically told me I was crazy and don’t deserve a refund… Did the whole dance again. 7 – 10 business days, still nothing. I got a supervisor on the phone. He claimed to fix my problem… Waited my 2 weeks for the check, nothing.
THE BEST PART! I call back, finally get a supervisor in the accounting department, and she tells me the last guy wasn’t a supervisor at all. He lied….. I asked to talk to somebody in upper management. They claimed that it was impossible. I asked for phone numbers or e-mail addresses. They claimed that they didn’t have anything like that on record.
Run screaming folks. I have spent hours on hold for an issue that should be easily fixable. Worst customer service I have ever dealt with in my life.”

“First year with it and nothing but crap. They just denied a chemical stress test I need for leaky heart valves. This alone might give me a heart attack.
Loved our blue cross… husband’s company switched over to Coventry this year. 2 surgeries and several tests, co-pays, etc and paying a fortune weekly and we are tapped out. Apparently, everyone at his work has complained. Is this part of Obama care? I want nothing to do with it.”

My employer had to switch to them and now it is a constant problem every time I have to get a prescription filled. God forbid my children or myself need anything other than a doctor’s visit($1000 per person deductible)
This insurance company only wants to insure people who don’t use it! They even go so far as to tell you dosages on prescriptions, no matter what your doctor prescribes. I pay way more a month than I will ever receive! And they call themselves the #1 insurance company. That’s a crock!”
